Abu Fandira
Marsa Alam · Fury Shoal · Egypt
Abu Fandira is one of those Red Sea dive sites that proves world-class diving does not have to mean deep walls and adrenaline-fueled shark encounters. This gem of the Fury Shoal region in Egypt's deep south offers pristine shallow coral gardens, crystal-clear water, and the very real possibility of sharing your dive with a pod of wild spinner dolphins. I arrived early on a calm morning, and before we had geared up, the crew spotted dorsal fins circling the reef. A pod of perhaps thirty spinner dolphins was resting in the sheltered water behind the reef crest. Some of us slipped in with snorkels, floating quietly while curious juveniles spiraled in the clear water below. These encounters set the tone for everything Abu Fandira delivers: intimate, unhurried, and deeply satisfying. The reef itself is a showcase of Red Sea hard coral diversity. The reef top begins at 2 meters, forming a broad plateau covered in table corals, branching Acropora, fire corals, and massive brain corals in pristine condition. Clownfish nestle in anemones, pufferfish putter along coral heads, and schools of anthias create orange and pink clouds above the reef edge. The reef slopes gently to a sandy floor at around 18 to 22 meters, with isolated coral bommies worth exploring individually. Giant moray eels coil in the base of one, a stonefish lies camouflaged on another, and octopuses squeeze into crevices in a third. Bluespotted ribbontail rays rest on the sand, and nudibranchs crawl across the substrate. What makes Abu Fandira exceptional is the combination of easy conditions and genuine quality. Mild currents and shallow depths make it accessible to newly certified divers, yet the coral health rivals any top-tier Red Sea reef. And always, there is that possibility of dolphins spiraling through the sunlit water above.

FAQ
Can I swim with dolphins at Abu Fandira?
Abu Fandira is known for a resident pod of spinner dolphins that rest in the sheltered waters around the reef. While encounters are not guaranteed, dolphins are present on many visits. The typical approach is snorkeling rather than scuba diving for dolphin interactions, as the animals are more comfortable with snorkelers at the surface. Egyptian environmental guidelines encourage passive observation rather than chasing or touching the dolphins. Entering the water quietly and letting the dolphins approach on their own terms leads to the most rewarding and ethical encounters.
Is Abu Fandira suitable for beginners?
Abu Fandira is one of the most beginner-friendly dive sites in the Egyptian deep south. The maximum depth is around 22 meters, but most of the best coral formations and marine life are found between 5 and 15 meters. Currents are typically mild, visibility is excellent, and the reef provides natural shelter from waves. The shallow profile allows long bottom times, making it ideal for new divers building confidence and for photographers who want extended time with their subjects.
How do I reach Abu Fandira?
Abu Fandira is located in the Fury Shoal area of the southern Egyptian Red Sea, accessible by liveaboard from Marsa Alam, Port Ghalib, or Hamata. It is included on many southern itineraries ranging from three to seven days. Some day boats from Hamata can also reach the site, though the journey is long. Liveaboard access is recommended as it allows early morning dives when dolphin encounters are most likely.
